Contains 40 letters written by various members of the Garcelon and Steward families in Chico, Susanville, Sacramento, San Francisco, Princeton, Santa Rosa, Donahue to relatives in Maine. Correspondents include: Lydia Garcelon Steward, Helen M. Kingsley (later Helen M. Warren), Charles C. Garcelon, Joseph I. Steward, Robert Peel Garcelon, Marianne Garcelon, Frank Steward, and Robert E. Warren. Also includes 1 letter written by Augusta Garcelon Hunton from Otisville [Texas?]. The bulk of the letters were written between 1860 and 1876. The letters written by Joseph and Lydia Steward describe the management of a hotel and livery service with the assistance of Chinese.

Lydia Ann Garcelon Steward (October 1, 1829-December 25, 1931); daughter of Harris and Eliza Garcelon (sister of Helen M. Kingsley Warren and Augusta Hunton); born in Maine; died in Redlands, California; married Joseph Ireland Steward (July 2, 1828-September 29, 1911), who was the proprietor of the Union House in Chico, California and the Princeton Hotel in Princeton (Colusa County), California; parents of Frank R. Steward.
Helen Maria (or Marie) Garcelon Kingsley Warren (September 4, 1831-December 14, 1916); daughter of Harris and Eliza Garcelon; born in Maine; came to California in 1857 to live with her sister, Lydia Garcelon Steward; married Rufus Kingsley (1816-1867) of Susanville in 1861; married Robert Emmett Warren (1828-1892) of Chico in 1871; died in Redlands, California.
Charles Clark Garcelon (September 18, 1840-April 3, 1896); son of Harris and Eliza Garcelon; born in St. Albans, Maine; married to Mary Jane (Woods) Garcelon; railroad engineer; lived in Santa Rosa, California and Santa Cruz, California; died in San Francisco, California.
